Duodenoscope

Reprocessing

Duodenoscopes are complicated medical devices with side viewing cameras. These scopes have a difficult to clean the elevator mechanism that requires manual cleaning. Cleaning should include brushing and flushing both sides of the elevator and careful visual inspection. Use the EndoInspect borescope to visually inspect duodenoscope during reprocessing to see inside the lumen and elevator

"Duodenoscopes are a type of endoscope that allows doctors to view the top of a patient's small intestine or duodenum."

Contaminated Duodenscopes

linked to 3 deaths, 45 infections

“An FDA analysis of medical device reports received between Oct. 15, 2018 and March 31, 2019 found three reports of death, 45 reports of patient infection and 159 reports of device contamination tied to inadequate reprocessing of duodenoscopes…”

Borescope Examination

"Multiple society and manufacturer recommendations have outlined the importance of meticulous stepwise re- processing, with emphasis on adequacy of precleaning and washing and on visual inspection to identify endo- scope damage and verify reprocessing efficacy."

What You See

"...borescope examination of 20 patient-ready en- doscopes after drying and overnight vertical storage re- vealed various findings, including discoloration, scratches, and filaments of debris involving the channel."

Best Practices

Visual inspection of lumen and elevator mechanism with a borescope for biofilm or debris that remains after cleaning is an important quality assurance step during reprocessing.
